Synopsis: Ian Bradley is the definition of a Wall Street hotshot: seven-figure salary, designer suits, and a corner office. His drive off the floor is just as potent. Every woman who knows him has felt the rush. But now he’s met his match in Lara McKenzie—a woman with the power to bring Ian to his knees.

An ambitious, whip-smart daughter of FBI agents, Lara is a rising star in fighting white-collar crime. Her latest case—the investigation of Ian Bradley for insider trading—could make her career. She knows a scoundrel when she sees one. Ian fits the bill: a cocky, ridiculously handsome bad boy with a slick swagger.

She’ll do anything to prove he’s guilty. He’ll do anything to prove he’s not. But it’s only a matter of time before their fierce battle of wits gets oh so hot and personal. Now, taking down Ian has become more than business for Lara. It’s become a pleasure—and there’s more at risk than she ever dreamed. (from Goodreads)

REVIEW

haAs you may have noticed, I’ve been slacking in the reading department lately. That’s due in part to my watching more dramas than I had been before, but I also just haven’t been in the mood to read as much recently. But that’s okay. I think we all go through these cycles sometimes. Anyway, I usually go for a Lauren Layne book when I’m in one of these phases, and she came through for me again. Thank you, Ms. Layne!

Readability: 5/5

One thing I love about Lauren Layne’s writing is how easy it is to read, and this book was no exception. Everything flows so smoothly, and the story jumps off of the pages.

Characterization: 3/5

The characters in this one fell a little flat for me. It felt like there should have been 100 or so more pages for us to get to know them better. Despite that, Layne always makes me feel for her characters. I could easily put myself in either Lara or Ian’s shoes and understand their perspectives.

Setting: 5/5

I love office romances. I want them in my books. I want them in my dramas. I want them everywhere. While I wouldn’t like the hustle and bustle of living in NYC myself, I sure do love to read about it.

Interest Level: 4/5

Layne’s novels are always light but heartfelt, so they’re easy to read but I’m not going to forget them any time soon. I can always connect to the characters and feel for them, which I appreciate in a novel.

Total: 17/20 = 85% B

Favorite Quotes:

  • “But if getting to know Ian and his friends has taught me anything, it’s that fighting for what’s right isn’t always as simple as following the rules. Sometimes you’ve got to bend a couple to get the bad guy.” (225)
  • “What’s the point of clearing my name, of getting my life back, if she’s not in it?” (230)
